Theatre Photography – The RSC ‘The Boy in the Dress’
‘The Boy in the Dress‘ Opening Night
Last week I was commissioned by the RSC to cover the opening night of their brand new musical ‘The Boy in the Dress’ at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.
The show, directed by Gregory Doran, features a star studded creative team: David Walliams, who wrote the novel; scriptwriter Mark Ravenhill, and Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers who wrote the music.
I had a roving role photographing the host of celebrities arriving on the green carpet (green not red for the football inspired show). Despite the pouring rain the crowds lined the green carpet and gave everyone a cheer, celebrity or not.
David Walliams arrived early stopping to pose for selfies and sign autographs, while Robbie Williams made a grand entrance just a few minutes before the show was due to start, sweeping down the green carpet with his wife Ayda Field and their entourage.
They were joined by comedians David Baddiel and Alan Carr, actor Ray Fearon, singer Natalie Imbruglia, and singer-songwriter and broadcaster Cerys Matthews.
As well as the arrivals I also covered the VIP reception during the interval and the curtain call at the end of the show where Robbie Williams, David Walliams and Guy Chambers joined the cast onstage, much to the delight of the audience.
