News From Birmingham Based Conference Photographer Simon Hadley

I had a super busy week last week providing photographic coverage at two major national conferences.

The first half of the week was spent in Birmingham covering the NFU (National Farmers Union) Annual Conference and AGM at the ICC in Birmingham. It is the tenth consecutive year that I have been commissioned as the official conference photographer.

Brexit and the threat of coronavirus dominated the agenda and keynote speakers including; Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs George Eustice, Director-General of the CBI Dame Carolyn Fairbairn and NFU President Minette Batters, spoke to a packed and lively audience of delegates comprising thousands of farmers.

As official photographer I photographed all of the delegates, speakers, break out sessions and photo-calls, continually uploading them ‘live’ to the NFU’s website and flikr stream as well as supplying images on request to regional, national and international newspapers, magazines, trade press and websites.

The second half of the week was spent in London at the QE11 Conference Centre in Westminster. The event was the APCC (Association of Police and Crime Commissioners), NPCC (National Police Chiefs Council) Partnership Summit 2020 (aka Police Chiefs Conference 2020).

This was originally the 2019 conference which had been moved twice, first for the October 31 Brexit date and then for the December 12 General Election… third time lucky!

High powered keynote speakers included the Home Secretary Priti Patel and Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott, as well as senior police officers and civil servants.

The speakers, break out sessions debates, networking sessions and exhibition spaces as well as an evening reception there was a lot of photography to cover. With serious topics being discussed from local policing to counter terrorism, I needed to be discreet, professional and unobtrusive while still capturing high quality images of all the speakers and delegates

I was also regularly uploading images ‘live’ throughout the conference to the communications/ press teams who were keeping up a constant stream of social media posts.
