Birmingham Lunar New Year Celebrations

Kung Hei Fat Choy Birmingham!
News from Birmingham based freelance photographer Simon Hadley
Happy Lunar Year…a record breaking 46 000 people welcomed in the Year of the Rabbit in a series of celebratory events across Birmingham over the weekend.
I was on hand to capture all of the activities starting on Friday with a portrait session for Pom Pom the giant panda, followed by events at Bullring & Grand Central on Saturday and Hippodrome Square in Southside on Sunday.
Lions, dragons, traditional singing, dancing and music, Shaolin kung fu demonstrations, face changers, crafts and calligraphy, a fun fair and fireworks all passed before my camera. I even became part of the show at one point when the compere invited me on to the stage to take a picture of the huge crowd all waving and cheering.
A great weekend and a great set of pictures, the only downside was the cold temperatures, I don’t think my fingertips properly defrosted until Monday afternoon!
