Portrait of the Moroccan Ambassador

News from Birmingham Photographer Simon Hadley.

Last week I was commissioned to photograph the current Moroccan Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Hakim Hajoui, during a visit to the Barber Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Birmingham, where he came face to face with Portrait of the Moroccan Ambassador Abd el-Ouahed ben Messaoud ben Mohammed Anoun of 1600 – the earliest known British painting of a Muslim figure. The sitter has been suggested as the inspiration for Shakespeare’s Othello.

Pictured are The Barber Institute of Fine Arts Director Professor Jennifer Powell with the current Moroccan Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Hakim Hajoui and the ‘Moroccan Ambassador’ portrait.
