Fairport’s ‘Cropredy’ Convention
Fairport Convention…The t-shirts 1979-2010
I have recently completed a personal photographic project in conjunction with legendary folk rockers Fairport Convention. The band this year celebrated the 30th anniversary of their music festival at Cropredy in rural Oxfordshire.
I attended the festival in 2009 to photograph Steve Winwood and Cat Stevens who were headlining. In between acts I took a few portraits of the fans and noticed that 90% of the audience members were proudly wearing t-shirts from one of the previous festivals. The idea came to me that it would make a great series of portraits if I could get hold of a fan and t- shirt from every year. I put the idea to the band who then put an appeal on their website with my contact details.
Getting hold of 30 people with 30 t-shirts was the easy part, I then had to arrange to meet up with them all at a two day festival with 20,000 other fans, in the rain, with no mobile phone signal, a real logistical feat. Incredibly it all went like clockwork and I managed to get all of the individuals as well as each of the five band members in their favourite t-shirts, plus on the last day of the festival a huge group shot. The images were displayed on the big screen over the main stage, fantastic to see my pictures 40 feet high.
A challenging but really enjoyable project, I met some wonderful characters and produced a great set of pictures.
