Into the black at the mac
I have been working with mac, The Midland Arts Centre, since their relaunch back in May. Initially covering the opening weekend and more recently photographing their fantastic new facilities for the events and conference team.
I have also documented their recent exhibitions including James Webb’s ‘Untitled States’, part of which, a monumental sound installation ‘The Black Passage’, provided me with an interesting challenge.
The installation consisted of a long insulated tunnel, pitch black, with speakers at one end playing a recording of an elevator ascending and descending a South African mine.
The darkness and rumbling industrial sound is disorientating and slightly disturbing for visitors, imagine what it was like for a photographer struggling with a tripod and a dodgy torch !
