Horse Racing WAGs
I had a great commission last week for the Irish Examiner newspaper. I was photographing the wives and partners of jockeys Ruby Walsh, Barry Geraghty and Paul Carberry and trainer Gordon Elliott, for a diary style feature about their week at the Festival.
I spent three years as a photographer and then picture editor at the Gloucestershire Echo in Cheltenham, so I am used to covering the horse racing, photographing horse racing WAGs is however something entirely new.
While most of the other photographers were chasing after Zara Phillips or Katie Price I was photographing my quartet of glamorous Irish ladies at various locations around the racecourse.
The girls were great fun and happy to be photographed as long as I didn’t expect them to stop and pose. As you can imagine they all had either husbands or horses riding in every race so their attention was always on the track or the parade ring, I just had to follow them and keep recording the action.
I finally managed to get all four of them together (previously I had been photographing them individually or in pairs) for a group picture in front of the main stand, just as I was pressing the shutter trainer Gordon Elliott’s horse, Carlito Brigante, came storming up the home straight, of course Annie Bowles (Gordon Elliott’s fiance) was jumping up and down with excitement, the horse won and I had to take my group picture of the girls while walking backwards in front of them, paparazzi style, as they rushed up to the winners enclosure.
