A Portrait

Less is more (sometimes..)

A few weeks ago I was commissioned to photograph Sir Keith Porter at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

Sir Keith, from the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine based at The QE Hospital, was knighted in the New Years honours for services to the armed forces.

The magazine I was taking the pictures for, Surgeons’ News, had recently had a redesign and was dropping its old policy of using submitted pictures in order to have strong stylish portraits taken specifically for its interview and feature pages.

I was the first photographer to be commissioned under this new regime. As a result I went to town with portable studio lighting, a variety of locations and just about every lens in my camera bag.

After finishing my ‘Ben Hur’ style production I took a few simple portraits with a standard prime lens using available window light and a reflector.

No prizes for guessing which picture was used across the double page spread.
