Life In The Fast Lane.

I was recently commissioned to photograph racing driver Darryl O’Young who was competing at the World Touring Car Championship’s UK round at Donington Park

As a photographer and lifelong motor racing fan the chance to go and spend a day behind the scenes at a world class motor racing event was a dream job.

The pictures were for a prestigious Chinese Airline’s in-flight magazine (Darryl is based in Hong Kong), portraits and behind the scenes colour was the brief.

For the driver (not for the mechanics!) there is a lot of hanging around between practice and qualifying sessions and I think Darryl was quite pleased to have me to show around the garage and motor home. I was struck by the incredible, almost forensic attention to detail, with every aspect of the car set up scrutinised to fractions of millimetres.

As I mentioned before the engineers and mechanics worked non stop preparing the cars, they really had my sympathy come the race on Sunday afternoon when Darryl and team mate Yuke were involved in ‘incidents’ right from the start (Yuke finished the race with his car looking as though it was held together by gaffer tape!) Despite all the drama Darryl managed to get the fastest lap and moved up to 3rd place in the Independents Championship.
