Theatre & Arts Photography – In Memoriam

News from Birmingham based freelance photographer Simon Hadley

Last week I photographed ‘In Memoriam’ an open air art installation by artist Luke Jerram.

The artwork, which will be on display at Aston Park in Birmingham until May 16, is the focus of this year’s ‘ A Matter of Life and Death Festival’, an annual arts and culture event aiming to encourage conversation about death and dying created by local organisation BrumYODO (YODO – You Only Die Once) working in partnership with the Birmingham Hippodrome.

The installation features 120 flags created from NHS bed sheets arranged in the form of a medical logo (when viewed from above).

‘In Memoriam’ pays tribute to the NHS health and care workers who have been risking their lives during the pandemic, as well as a temporary memorial for the public to visit and remember all those who have died during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was fortunately a beautiful day for the photography, with a light breeze blowing through the installation, the blue and white sheets reflecting the blue sky and clouds and the sunlight adding another dimension to the artwork creating uniform shadows on the ground.

My brief for the day was to capture as much of the installation as possible, from wider views of the site, close up and abstract views as well as a portrait of the artist Luke Jerram who was visiting the site prior to it opening to the public.
